Johann Smith released

Toronto FC released Johann Smith today from their roster. A young (22) depth player who has spent less than a year with Toronto, most fans will wish him well. However, he did not seem to build on his scattered appearances. Smith had speed and energy in abundance, but all other categories needed a top-up. Toronto already has three teenagers on their roster, so the "build for the future" element is covered. I expect that Smith will find a spot on a MLS roster sooner or later. He could eventually qualify for the scoring ex-player club that is run by Edson Buddle. TFC now has 2 vacant roster spots and I expect that the next move should include Ali Gerba.

Young player with some potential it's a shame TFC couldn't keep him , but with the bush league MLS roster rules and the current player moves the team has planned ( Gerba and maybe more ) he had to go .

id just like to say with no lies, johann is a friend of mine, he has been asking toronto for the past 3 months minimum if he can leave and be allowed to find somewhere new. i know that TFC have said they released him, but honestly I can assure you that he chose to leave and he was very relieved to do so, he had been asking management to leave for ages. He is happy now and looking to move abroad possibly back to UK.

Well. wish him all the luck. I wrote when Greg Sutton was taken from the roster that no bridges should be burned...and if Sutton at 32 could play for TFC again, Johann Smith at 22 has much more ahead of him. When MLS dropped the reserve teams and went with a roster of 24 (Toronto only has 22) it had to work against getting playing time for a young player like Smith. Hope he finds a team soon.

you are right annonymous. He has been begging them to release him and now that he is gone he will find a club in Europe. TFC are losers.
